Build a site for its visitors

It sound like common sense really, but a site should be built for the people who are visiting it! However, this seems to be overlooked on a large number of websites.

Two main areas to look at when planning your website, should be :

  • Who will be visiting your site or who are you targeting it towards
  • What do those users want to see (or how do i get them to hit the big ‘buy now’ button)

IE security patch announced

Microsoft has anounced a security update to fix a security flaw in the Internet Explorer web browser. The update is to be released before the next scheduled updates of 9th February.

The security flaw is said to be one of the main causes for the recent attacks on Google with the French and German governments advising people to find an alternative browser, at least until the security hole has been patched. The vulnerability could allow attackers to install a Trojan virus to take control of your system and potentially collect private data.

Back to basics – Link building

I am going to publish a few back to basics, blog posts which will focus on some of the foundations in increasing awareness and promoting your website. The first focuses on building links to your website from others.

Links are still a major factor in search engine optimisation (seo) and should be part of your plan when having a website developed. What you need to acquire is in-bound links from quality websites; these are one way links that point to your website from another. This is apposed to reciprocal links which is like trading links with another website (that is both sites pointing to each other).

Word Of Mouth 2.0

Since business began, word of mouth has long been the best advertising tool. Around 80% of word of mouth recommendations are positive and lead to further sales (“J Curve,” Bazaarvoice and Keller Fay), with 71% of online shoppers reading reviews on products or services (Forrester).

So, in this digital day and age, has anything changed in the way we use word of mouth to spread the great message? Not really, no. If anything, it has enhanced it. Sure, the way we receive the message may have changed. Whether it be a Tweet or a Facebook post, or a comment on someone’s blog, but the message is still being passed around. Only now to a wider audience than you could have ever imagined just 15 or so years ago.
